My phone froze last week. It taught me something.
Upgrade Your Operating System
Hey friends,
Last week my phone froze. Nothing dramatic. It just… stopped working. Apps wouldn’t open. Messages wouldn’t send. The screen lagged behind every swipe. Like most people, my first instinct was to blame the app I was trying to use.
So I closed it. Opened it again. Deleted a few things. Nothing changed.
Then a message popped up across the screen.
“Software Update Available.”
It made me laugh.
The problem wasn’t the app.
The problem was everything running underneath it.
I’ve thought about that little message more than I probably should have.
Because I wonder how many of us are living the exact same way.
📖 One Story
Over the years, I’ve noticed something while coaching. Someone will tell me they want to start waking up earlier.
Or eating better.
Or exercising consistently.
Or being more patient with their kids.
Or finally taking care of themselves.
So we start talking. Not about workouts. About life.
They’re sleeping five hours a night. Their calendar is full of commitments they never wanted to say yes to. They haven’t had dinner with their spouse without checking their phone in months.
Every morning begins with email.
Every evening ends with exhaustion.
They’re trying to build a healthier life… on top of an operating system that’s already overloaded.
It reminds me of something I used to do after basketball. When one part of my life felt off, I’d immediately look for something new.
A new training program.
A new challenge.
Another goal.
Something to fix the feeling. Then life slowed me down. Losing my parents changed the questions I asked. Getting married changed what I valued. Starting ALLSMITH changed how I thought about success.
I stopped asking,
“What’s the next thing I need?”
And started asking,
“What kind of life is everything I’m doing creating?”
Those are very different questions.
💡 One Reflection
Maybe that’s why lasting change feels so hard.
We spend so much time updating the apps… without ever questioning the operating system.
We buy a new planner. Download another habit tracker. Listen to another podcast. Read another book.
None of those things are bad. I’ve done all of them.
But eventually I realized my life wasn’t changing because I didn’t need more information. I needed better rhythms.
A morning that didn’t begin with urgency. Friends who made me want to become better instead of busier. More walks without my phone. More dinners where nobody was in a hurry to leave the table.
More sleep.
More laughter.
More time outside.
Less noise.
The older I get, the more I’m convinced that our lives are shaped less by big decisions and more by the environment we return to every day.
Our routines become our identity. Our relationships become our perspective. Our recovery determines our capacity. Our environment quietly teaches us what “normal” looks like.
Maybe that’s the real operating system.
🎯 One Invitation
You don’t need to change your whole life this week.
Just notice it.
Pay attention to the things running quietly in the background.
How do your mornings begin?
Who gets the best version of you?
When was the last time you sat outside without trying to be productive?
Who do you become when nobody is asking anything from you?
Maybe the biggest upgrade available isn’t another habit. Maybe it’s creating a life where the healthy choice becomes the natural one.
Where peace isn’t something you stumble into on vacation. It’s something you’ve designed into an ordinary Tuesday. I think that’s what we’re all looking for.
Not a better app.
A better way of living.
Until next time,
- Bryce
