He Was One Of The Best Big Wave Surfers Alive...And He Was Sitting In A Chair On The Beach.
Shane Dorian has surfed 60-foot waves at Jaws. He's been held underwater long enough that most people wouldn't come back up. He's made decisions in the barrel that separate the living from the reckless.
And for five years, his back was so wrecked he couldn't paddle out with his son.
He'd drive to the beach. Set up a chair in the sand. And film.
While his kid surfed alone.
““ had crazy fear around — is this the rest of my life? Is my back gonna be my boss forever? Is it gonna stop me from bonding with my kid?”
That fear is what finally made him change.
He got serious about functional medicine. He did stem cell treatment in Mexico. 260 million cells across his spine, shoulders, and knees over three days. He took four months completely off. He rebuilt from zero at 48 years old with a blown ACL, 20 extra pounds, and no identity left to hide behind.
He's 53 now. His body is the best it's been in 15 years. And he paddles out with his son every chance he gets.
THE LESSON
Most people wait until the pain is unbearable before they change. Shane waited until it was personal, until it was costing him something he couldn't replace.
That's the only motivation that actually sticks. Not the goal. The thing you're about to lose.
He also said something that landed differently than any longevity quote I've heard:
"I want to get old. I just don't want to feel old."
That's not a fitness goal. That's an identity decision. And it changes everything about how you show up day to day.
This week's question:
What are you sitting on the sideline watching that you were built to be in the water for?
“It’s not the lack of plans, courses, podcasts, or motivation that holds you back. It’s You. You are the lock and the key.”
