You already know what to do. So why isn't it working? - The real reason people ignore your advice and the military experiment that proved it.
People don't move on information. They move on incentive. The question was never what they needed to do — it was what it was costing them not to do it.
Find the number. Name the cost. Then offer the way out.
This isn't just a military nutrition trick. It applies to how you coach clients, how you lead a team, and even how you talk to yourself about why you should actually get up early tomorrow.
Dr. Nick Barringer walked into a room full of overweight soldiers ready to change the game.
He'd just become the military's registered dietitian. He had the credentials, the science, the meal plans. He gave the soldiers everything he knew in one clean, information-dense session.
A month later, he came back to check in.
Same faces. Nobody had lost weight. Not a single one.
"I gave them a bunch of information, but I didn't inspire them. I didn't motivate them." — Dr. Nick Barringer, dietitian and former Army special ops nutritionist
So the next time, he did something different. He didn't change the information — he changed the framing.
He walked to the board, wrote out the monthly pay difference between a Private First Class and a Specialist, and asked the room a simple question: who here is paying a thousand dollars a month just to sit in this room?
Confused looks all around.
"Because that's what your decision is costing you," he told them. "You can't get promoted if you're flagged. I can show you how to earn that money back — if you pay attention."
Hands went up. Same nutrition information. A completely different result. Half the room didn't come back the next month, because they didn't need to.
The Lesson
People don't move on information. They move on incentive. The question was never what they needed to do — it was what it was costing them not to do it.
Find the number. Name the cost. Then offer the way out.
This isn't just a military nutrition trick. It applies to how you coach clients, how you lead a team, and even how you talk to yourself about why you should actually get up early tomorrow.
The "why" has to cost something. Inspiration on its own fades by Tuesday. Inspiration attached to a real, specific cost sticks.
So ask yourself: what is it actually costing you to stay exactly where you are?

“It’s not the lack of plans, courses, podcasts, or motivation that holds you back. It’s You. You are the lock and the key.”
