Build a Life You Don’t Need a Vacation From

Your next vacation is here and you don't need a passport for this one.

Hey friends,

Every summer, we say the same thing.

“I can’t wait to get away.”

We count down the weeks. We save the money. We plan the trip.

We dream about sleeping in, watching sunsets, taking long walks, laughing with the people we love, and forgetting what day it is.

Then the vacation ends.

We wheel our suitcases back through the airport, promise ourselves we’ll come back next year, and somehow convince ourselves that real life starts again on Monday.

I’ve been thinking about that.

Because I don’t think most of us want a longer vacation.

I think we want more of the version of ourselves we become while we’re on one.

📖  One Story

Last summer, my wife and I were sitting on a beach just before sunset.

Nobody was in a hurry. Kids were digging holes they had no intention of finishing. Someone was trying to teach their dog how to catch a Frisbee. The dog had other plans.

A family was eating sandwiches that somehow tasted like a five-star meal. An older couple walked by holding hands. They weren’t talking. They didn’t need to.

I remember looking around and thinking…

“Nobody here is doing anything extraordinary.”

They’re just paying attention.

Nobody was chasing productivity.

Nobody cared what time it was.

Nobody seemed interested in proving anything.

They were simply present.

And it made me wonder…

Why does it feel so much easier to notice life when we’re somewhere else?

The beach didn’t create peace.
It simply removed enough noise for people to hear it.

Maybe that’s why vacations feel so magical.

Not because life suddenly becomes beautiful.

Because, for a little while, we stop rushing past it.

💡  One Reflection

I’ve realized something over the years. The best parts of vacation usually have nothing to do with the vacation.

It’s the slow morning coffee.

The walk after dinner.

The random conversation with a stranger you’ll never see again.

The game of cards that somehow turns into three hours of laughing.

The afternoon nap you didn’t earn.

The sunset you actually stopped to watch.

None of those things require a passport. They just require permission. Somewhere along the way, we’ve convinced ourselves that joy belongs on the calendar a few weeks each year.

Adventure is something we book. Rest is something we save up for. Connection is something we’ll get around to after work slows down.

But what if we’ve had it backward?

What if vacations aren’t an escape from life… what if they’re a reminder of the life we’ve been meaning to build all along?

A life with room to breathe.

Room to laugh. Room for people. Room for adventure on an ordinary Wednesday.

Not because you’re on vacation.

Because that’s simply how you choose to live.

Until next time.

Live a story worth telling.

Stay on the hunt for who you’ve not yet become.
